Welcome to the 57th edition of the ‘Meet the R4R Runners’, where this week we get to meet Scott. Scotty is a regular at R4R and whether it be my compliments on the mean moustache he can grow, or the number of days he’s exercised in a row (surely over a year now?), I always enjoy seeing him.

He’s a good bloke, he’s a great part of our community, and I enjoyed reading his responses to the Rags questions. So, without further ado, let’s meet Scotty!

What is your name?

Scott Lockey

Where are you from?

Born in Melbourne, grew up in Campbelltown (south-west Sydney), came to Canberra for the first time in 1988, move around with Defence for a couple of decades, settled here in 2010

What's your favourite thing about Canberra? (apart from R4R obviously)

It’s a big country town with all of the benefits of a city. I particularly like being able to run, walk, MTB and SUP all within a few km.

How did you hear about R4R and when did you first attend?

Coming out of 2020 Covid-iso I was looking for a HHH running group or similar because I liked the idea of combining running and ‘re-hydration’. Came across R4R in a google search and the message really struck a chord, particularly with the trauma the world was suffering in 2020. 11 Nov 2020 was my first one.

What's your favourite thing about R4R?

Introducing new people to a supportive and welcoming community, particularly those who are new to the ACT. I have also enjoyed meeting new people and hearing their stories.

What would you like to see R4R do?

‘Franchise’ the concept to other states and eventually other nations. I am also a regular at Parkrun and when I see the international spread that concept has achieved, I reckon R4R could eventually achieve the same.

What's the longest you've ever run?

2022 Snowy Trail Marathon, 44.6km. My first-ever marathon. (I recommend not doing a trail marathon as your first!)

Are you planning on taking part in any races or events soon or are there any just gone?

Nothing in the calendar yet for 2023 but I’m keen to tackle something unusual. Might look for a 24hr adventure race or a team/relay ultra.

Which three people (alive or dead) would you like to run 6km with?

Neil Armstrong - I am still inspired by the first moon landing and would love to hear about it first hand.

P!nk - I love her music and even though I have never seen her live, her energy on stage is inspirational. I reckon she’d kick my butt over 6km though!

Woollarawarre Bennelong - I would love to hear about life in this great nation prior to European arrival.

What does resilience mean to you?

Using a combination of mind, body and ’spirituality’ to cope with whatever challenge comes my way

When you look back on the hardest moment/s in your life, is there anything you wish you could have told yourself?

I feel a bit guilty sometimes about how little adversity I have had to face in my life compared to some of the immense challenges others face. But I do have a mantra that keeps me going. I ask ‘will the world stop turning?’ and ‘will the sun still come up tomorrow?’ If the answers are no and yes respectively, then tomorrow will be a new day where I will be alive and ready to face whatever challenge comes my way.
