Welcome to the 76th edition of the Meet the R4R Runners, where this week we get to meet Emily! You’ll often see Emily at the Friday R4R and there’s not many people that are warmer to talk to. She’s another pillar of our community and we’re stoked to have convinced her to do the Rag! So, without further ado, let’s meet Emily!
What is your name?
Emily
Where are you from?
Canberra
What's your favourite thing about Canberra?
So many things! The bushland, nature reserves, trails, and parks. The awesome running community. Friends and family. There's always something to do and it's close to the coast and the snow.
How did you hear about R4R and when did you first attend?
I think I might have come across R4R during a Google search for running groups, and I first attended a Wednesday evening run about 3 years ago.
What's your favourite thing about R4R?
The sense of community and running with friends. I also love the course - there is something very special about running by the lake, enjoying a sunset or a sunrise. It's always beautiful, rain, hail, or shine.
What would you like to see R4R do?
I'd love to see a similar group for teenagers, encouraging them to be active and talk with each other and people they trust, connecting with others, and building resilience and self-esteem.
What's the longest you've ever run?
A half marathon a couple of months ago, with my awesome R4R friends who wouldn't let me back out of it, haha!
Are you planning on taking part in any races or events soon or are there any just gone?
City to Surf and Stromlo are locked in. I'd also like to run another half marathon, and do something different like the Gumby Moon, Capital to Coast, Tarawera - I could go on and on!
Which three people (alive or dead) would you like to run or walk 6km with?
Geoff Moore, who runs the Speedygeese running group - he's so inspiring and I love his words of wisdom and sense of humour. I'd love to walk 6kms with my grandparents. We were very close, and I'd love to enjoy that time with them again. I like to run 6k with anyone up for a chat and a drink afterward :)
What does resilience mean to you?
So many things! Having the strength to keep going, not giving up. Having the courage to let go. Being able to adapt and cope with challenges. Ultimately, it's about having a growth mindset and believing in yourself.
When you look back on the hardest moment/s in your life, is there anything you wish you could have told yourself?
That's it's OK not to be OK. It's not all about the healing, recovery, and the end goal. Getting through a hard time is not a linear process. It's two steps forward, a step backward. It's about getting through those hard days, allowing yourself to rest. Be kind to yourself.
Thanks, Emily!
