I think it's a bit of a paradox.

I think people are afraid of being their true selves due to fear of what others may think of them or being criticised for it.

The irony is, when people ridicule others for being their true selves, it only ever comes from a place of insecurity. So you have people afraid to truly express themselves how they want to, because they might be torn down by someone who is also afraid to be themselves, so as soon as they see others doing so they get envious and want to bring them back down.

Less judgment and more curiosity. Let’s face it, we can all be a bit judgey at times. If there’s something that makes us feel uncomfortable, rather than judging we probably need to do some exploration and education which in terms helps with understanding and compassion as Clare mentioned.

Demonstrate, encourage and celebrate displays of vulnerability and authenticity. Let people know it’s ok to not be ok, that’s it’s ok to be ‘different’, and that there is a community out there for them.

More individuals need to have the courage to be themselves, then encourage those around them to be themselves and “remove the mask”.

Lead by example.

More courage and less expecting society to be less judgemental. Can’t control what others think, but we can control what we do.
