Before we start… it’s your last chance!
And just to let you know…
There’s no other way to be
A guest article from Matt Breen
I sat across from my Mum in the hospital room, admiring her strength and stoicism. I broke the silence by telling her how amazing it was that despite her losing battle with cancer, she wasn’t letting it win by the way she continued to live.
She looked at me and told me very simply… There’s no other way to be, Matt. There’s no other way to be.
R4R is built on the idea that we aren’t what happens to us, we are how we respond... and that regardless of the struggle we face, we need to ‘Just. Keep. Moving.’ no matter what…
It’s a mindset, that for me, is inspired by my Mum’s stoicism… but it requires a caveat. My Mum’s resilience and stoicism was supported by her mindset, medicine, the love from her family and friends, and so much more.
And as momentum with R4R builds and more and more people buy into our mission for a suicide-free Canberra, I can feel a sense of responsibility that people understand the supporting cast in keeping moving no matter what.
And last weeks guest article from Clare Carey did exactly that. To me, it’s obvious that R4R exists within a broader ecosystem of mental health, relying on remedies ranging from self-care to emergency services.
But to others, resilience might be equated with older interpretations of toughness and stoicism. And that’s why it’s important we define just keeping moving as whatever it is that helps improve your situation, and no matter what as a belief that there is always something that can be done… no matter how small.
Because while our response to hardship will differ from others, it’s our response that defines us, and whenever we’re faced with one of life’s hurdles, we need to find ways to ‘Just. Keep. Moving.’
Because simply put… there’s no other way to be.
But what can be done?
If exercising with friends is what you need, we’ve got it. But as Clare put it, R4R is just the beginning for some. If you need help navigating the mental health landscape for what suits you, please contact Medicare Mental Health Centre Canberra. You won’t regret it.
And are we right?
Is there anything we’re missing in the above… Do we need to include a nuance… are we wrong..? If you have a thought, whatever it is, please let us know by leaving a comment or emailing us at hello@runningforresilience.com
Love your mums strength. 🩷
I saw this, it’s a great message.
‘It’s not about how many days you live in this world. It’s about how many great things you fit in’
