14km is daunting for some, so we hosted a training run the week beforehand... An hour or more of running takes a lot of energy, so we had a pasta night at The Dock the night before.
Come 2 AM on Sunday, alarm clocks would have been ringing… but many of us were already awake in equal parts excitement and fear of missing the bus. Our scheduled departure was 3:15 AM from the Arc de Resilience… and we weren’t waiting for anyone.
Everyone was on time and after three hours of trying to catch up on some sleep, we made it to Sydney Central with plenty of time to freshen up, grab a group photo and a coffee, before heading to the start line.
City 2 Surf is something to behold. Blaring music and flaring pyrotechnics, all amidst 100,000 people with smiles on their faces. It’s an incredible atmosphere that couldn’t even be dampened by the diabolical rain that fell mid-morning.
With everyone across the finish line and feeling better for the Recovery Session in Coogee, we made our way to Bendooley Estate in Berrima for an amazing spread of food.
With our belly’s full, legs tired, and a little liquid courage under some of our belts… there was only one thing to do with the 2 hours left on the road… that’s right… Karaoke…
The City 2 Surf Road Trip is a highlight for 50 brave souls willing to sign-up for the days experience. But it’s also become a symbol of what makes R4R such a special community.
An opportunity for people to create experiences with each other, underpinned by community, exercise, and a common goal. Depth of connection is what we try to offer and the City 2 Surf Road Trip definitely delivers.
It wouldn’t have been possible without Elysium EPLs sponsorship, Benny A’s organisation, and of course, without the people on the bus. Thank you to everyone and see you next year!
Better, not Bigger
The idea that we want to focus on depth of connection was born from an R4R strategy session two years ago. That meeting was led by Murray Bruce and like anything he’s done with R4R, the outcome has been great… much like the most recent poddy!
With a voice for radio, Murray sits down with Tiff and Singhy to talk all things Bravery Trek. It’s a great episode and we hope to get Murray’s dulcet tones back before Bravery Trek kicks off again this year.
And before we go…
Running for Resilience has grown fast, and giving our volunteers the tools to look after themselves (while spotting red flags in others and connecting them with support) has never been more important.
As such, we’re hosting a volunteer Mental Health Training session on August 20th and if you’d like more information, click the button below!
