Welcome to the 74th edition of Meet the R4R Runners, where his week, we get to meet Chuck. The first time I met Chuck, he had this infectious energy about him, and we spoke about our love for things based around community. He’s exactly the type of person that R4R needs, and we’re lucky to have him. So, without further ado, let’s meet him!
What is your name?
Chuck Prowse
Where are you from?
Canberra
What's your favourite thing about Canberra?
The access to nature and pumping coffee scene. I am a big Canberra advocate.
How did you hear about R4R and when did you first attend?
I first heard about R4R through my brother and first attended around a year ago.
What's your favourite thing about R4R?
Personally, for me it's a physical and mental weekly circuit breaker. I love connecting friends and family to R4R and more broadly I love the positive energy and vibe it brings to the community. I strongly believe people power will turn the tide on suicide prevention.
What would you like to see R4R do?
I think a post run winter plunge into the lake would be unreal. I used to run 'The Plunge' on Sunday mornings with a group of extended mates at Pine Island - we'd jump in the water and then chat over a plunger coffee in the carpark afterwards.
What's the longest you've ever run?
Recently I did a 30km run to the cotter and back. Prior to that was around 10km.
Are you planning on taking part in any races or events soon or are there any just gone?
I recently rode the Tour Aotearoa on a gravel bike, roughly 3,000km from the most northern tip (Cape Range) to the most southern tip (The Bluff) of New Zealand - it was bloody tough, but epic! I'm keen to do a half marathon and triathlon later in the year.
Which three people (alive or dead) would you like to run or walk 6km with?
I would have loved to take my late grandad Bruce; I could definitely see him have a good time burning around the lake in his wheelchair and mixing in with other runners. A good mate of mine who I've known from birth (born on the same day!) Sam Roche, when he visits from Forster. The third would be reserved for anyone that has been thinking about going to R4R but wants a run or walk partner - hit me up at!
What does resilience mean to you?
Resilience to me is just continuing to show up no matter how easy or hard it gets. Being present and showing up for friends and family, to work, to exercise and adventures, to that social event or more importantly showing up for yourself.
When you look back on the hardest moment/s in your life, is there anything you wish you could have told yourself?
Sometimes when we are under a lot of pressure it's hard to have clarity of thought. Sharing what you're going through with your close network, being vulnerable and putting yourself out there can really help. I like to have a toolbox of taglines to motivate me, like 'Be the vibe, bring the vibe' and the R4R tagline 'Just keep moving' really resonates with me. If you get out and start moving your body it can be the mental circuit breaker you need for the day, week, month or year.
Great responses, Chuck!

R4R Gift & R4R 4th Birthday
The R4R gift is happening again this year, on September 6th. Our 4th birthday (and the Dock’s 9th) is also happening and we’re looking at the 20th of December, so get your pencil and your diaries out, because both are going to be crackers!
