Welcome to the 25th edition of the ‘Meet the Runners’ rag. This week we knock out another favour to our friends across the ditch and make another New Zealander feel welcome in our country despite their horrible hospitality at Eden Park…
This week we get to meet Liam and if you don’t already know him, you might remember him as the bloke who took out the inaugural R4R gift, or from watching his head-to-head battle with Johnny Hulin in the lockdown challenge.
Regardless, if you get a chance to introduce yourself to this fella, I can recommend it. From Rugby, to beer, to life in general, Liam is a pleasure to talk to because of his energy, enthusiasm, and generally… just because he’s a great bloke. So without further ado, let’s meet Liam!
What is your name?
Liam O’Rorke
Where are you from?
Canberra (although I grew up in NZ for 12 years)
What's your favourite thing about Canberra? (apart from R4R obviously)
The abundant trails and loops on offer for running. Plus, Brumbies home games
How did you hear about R4R and when did you first attend?
Saw it on friends strava activities. First attendant in end of 2020
What's your favourite thing about R4R?
Competition, people you meet and the genuine conversations you can have face to face.
Is there anything you'd like to see R4R do?
Get involved with some relays or charity events (Last man standing). Expand R4R and display to the community what we’re all about.
Have you ever run a marathon before? If so, how'd you go?
Ran a few, my best was the half Mara at Weston Creek this year, snagged a podium finish.
Are you planning on taking part in any races or events soon?
R4R gift (gives CBR times a run for their money), CBR Beer mile and Stromlo Running festival.
Which three people (alive or dead) would you like to run 6km with?
David Goggins
Billy Connolly (even if it’s a walk with a pint along the way)
My Grandfather in his prime
What does resilience mean to you?
For me, it’s continuously challenging yourself and reaching out at any given time. I believe, the moment you stop challenging yourself your worst enemy gets ahead of you, which is yourself.
When you look back on the hardest moment/s in your life, is there anything you wish you could have told yourself?
Stay hard, stay focused and be who you are. The more you compare yourself to others and their work, the more you forget what your main individual purpose is.
We've stopped the count on Benny A vs. Jonesy... So, who do you think takes out the R4R gift this year (both male and female)?
Andrew Ponsonby (man’s on fine form) for male
Champagne running for female
Kia Ora
Who’s Kia Ora? I’m just joking. Thanks, Liam!
Great stuff Rorkey!
