Welcome to the 24th edition of the ‘Meet the R4R Runners’ where we get to meet one of the legends of the foreshore.
Whether it be the jingling of his keys with each step, his refusal to wear something other than short shorts and a tight white singlet, his undying love for the (not so mighty) Waratahs, or what I believe to be the best handshake you’ll ever get, Sammo is someone you’ll always enjoy seeing.
A regular at the Dock and at R4R runs, his energy is like no other and R4R is incredibly lucky to have a fella like him as part of the furniture. So without further ado, let’s meet Sammo / Schuey!
What is your name?
Sam Schumacher aka Schuey
Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Sydney but Canberra is my home now
What's your favourite thing about Canberra? (apart from R4R obviously)
Well for starters it’s a Rugby town and there’s also The Dock
How did you hear about R4R and when did you first attend?
Since I live at The Dock, it was only a matter of time before I was going to hear about R4R. I first attended around the winter of 2020.
What's your favourite thing about R4R?
It is a great bunch of people who come along and it has grown into its own little community. Many of the people who I’ve met at R4R have since become some of my best mates. In addition to that, coming to R4R allows me to remind Benny A of how good the Mighty Waratahs are!
Is there anything you'd like to see R4R do?
I’d love to see the R4R group run to the Jetty and then have a beer (maybe even two) and then continue onto the Commonwealth Ave Bridge, turn around and then stop at The Jetty again before heading back to The Dock. That would be a real pub run! An R4R trivia night would be pretty awesome as well.
Have you ever run a marathon before? If so, how'd you go?
I ran the City to Surf Perth Marathon back in 2016. I think I went alright but I was in a lot of pain afterwards but it was worth it (I probably should have trained).
Are you planning on taking part in any races or events soon?
The only race I’ll be doing anytime soon is the race to the bar at The Dock to get served.
Which three people (alive or dead) would you like to run 6km with?
Bruce Dickinson (Lead Singer of Iron Maiden), Larry David (The co-creator of Seinfeld) and Keith Miller (Australian cricket legend and RAAF war hero, not only to hear about his exploits on the cricket pitch and in the sky but to find out if the rumours between him and Princess Margaret were actually true).
What does resilience mean to you?
Resilience is the Waratahs being delt loss after loss last year but still fronting up week after week, not giving in, digging deep and doing NSW proud. True winners and champions in my eyes! But in all seriousness, resilience is the ability to pick yourself after a setback and triumph through great adversity.
When you look back on the hardest moment/s in your life, is there anything you wish you could have told yourself?
I would say that while it may be a real kick in the teeth right now, it is merely a fleeting thing and everything will be okay.
We've stopped the count on Benny A vs. Jonesy... So, who do you think takes out the R4R gift this year (both male and female)?
Liam for the Gents
Lili for the Ladies
A pleasure as always, Sammo!
Sammo forget to mention that he’s a terrible driver, unlike his brother Michael
