Welcome to the 17th edition of the ‘Meet the R4R Runners’ we’re we get to meet Kirk. When I say that this fella epitomises resilience, I mean it. He’s an avid Paramatta Eels fan and in his free time, he plays grade cricket. The combination of these two passions is a guaranteed way of making 52/52 weeks of the year tougher than it needs to be!
All jokes aside, regardless of the struggles mentioned above, Kirk is at R4R almost every time-slot and I really enjoy talking to him over a run or his regular peanut butter on toast for a Friday. He’s a fantastic bloke and R4R is lucky to have him, so let’s get to know him better!
What is your name?
Kirk
Where are you from?
Sydney
Have you always lived in Canberra?
No. Spent most of my time in Sydney and also lived overseas on a few occasions. Moved to Canberra in early 2020 just before the bushfires, the hailstorm and COVID.
Geez, timed it well! How did you first hear about R4R?
Facebook posts.
When did you first attend a R4R?
Around June 2020. When Canberra came out of lockdown last year. I wanted to join earlier in the year but I was too busy with work.
What keeps you coming back to R4R?
The fitness aspect but also a good way to spend Wednesday evening with like-minded individuals. Always good to have a free beer too.
Do you have a R4R Personal Best? If not, what’s your 5km PB?
Personal R4R was on 24 March 2021 – did 6km in 27:46.
Do you prefer the winter R4Rs or the Summer R4Rs?
Probably winter. You don’t stink and sweat as much after your run.
Do you prefer Friday or Wednesday R4R? or in other words… Do you prefer beer or coffee?
Really enjoy Friday morning R4R. Small group of people but gives you the opportunity to meet everyone in the whole group. Great way to start the day.
If you could go for a 3km/6km walk or run with 3 people alive or dead, who would you choose and why?
Don Bradman, Robin Williams and Kim Jong-Un. Three different people.
What does resilience mean to you?
The ability to overcome adversity through courage, commitment, growth, positive mindset, work ethic, and setting small goals.
Is there a time in your life where you’ve had to rely on your ability to be resilient
Loads of times where I had to show resilience – playing sport, living and working overseas in changing environments and obviously dealing with challenging situations/people at work.
If you could say one thing to someone going through something tough at the moment, what would it be?
Talk to someone.
In the 2022 edition of the R4R Gift, who will win the coveted Clydesdale award 100kg and above? Jonesy, Benny A, or other?
Other.
Thanks, Kirky!
