Welcome to the 99th edition of the Meet the R4R Runners. This week we get to meet Kyla, who’s not only given some cracking answers, she’s offered to run a yoga session at this Friday’s R4R! So without further ado, let’s meet Kyla!
What is your name?
Kyla Marais
Where are you from?
I was originally born in South Africa, grew up in Sydney and I am now living in Canberra.
What's your favourite thing about Canberra?
I love how active Canberra and of course the Autumn leaves!
How did you hear about R4R and when did you first attend?
I heard about R4R through a friend and first attended about a year ago when I moved here!
What's your favourite thing about R4R?
It is such a lovely community and makes a new city feel a bit more like home.
What would you like to see R4R do?
I would love to see R4R do more yoga sessions by the lake, running challenges and maybe a music concert someday!
Yoga 4 Resilience!
As mentioned above, there’ll be an option for yoga at this Friday’s R4R! Make sure you bring your yoga mats!
What's the longest you've ever run?
21km
Are you planning on taking part in any races or events soon or are there any just gone?
I just did a 10k race and would love to sign up for something soon! Thinking of a trail race as my next adventure of choice.
Which three people (alive or dead) would you like to run or walk 6km with?
My dad (he passed away 7 years ago) - we used to run a lot together growing up and this was one of my favourite memories!
My boyfriend Jack - he provides great conversation and encouragement during a run!
My brother Ryan - he is 6'7 and not much of a runner but I adore him and always enjoy exercising together.
What does resilience mean to you?
Resilience means overcoming adversity and moving forward. It can be little or small, though ultimately means stepping forward towards a better day!
When you look back on the hardest moment/s in your life, is there anything you wish you could have told yourself?
I wish I had told myself that you are never alone. There are so many amazing people out there that want to help and support you during hard times. I am so grateful for the wonderful people in my life who have helped me through ups and downs. Ultimately life is all about connection and helping others <3.
Thanks, Kyla!
Keep left and bring your head lamps
To help with the head lamp side of things, Mont Adventure Equipment will be setting up a tent at tonight’s run. Better yet, there’ll be one lucky recipient of a male or female lightspeed jacket (RRP $350), and one lucky recipient of a headtorch (RRP $60)! Even better yet, we’ve been given early access to their factory sale prices.
Call for runners and course marshals: Tallaganda 30x30
Our very own
is organising a 30 km through Tallaganda State Forest on June 1st. She’s doing so to call for its protection as part of Australia's commitment to 30x30—the global target to protect 30% of Earth's land and waters by 2030.The team (already consisting of a few R4R members) is fundraising to support National Parks Association of NSW and Wilderness Australia as they collaboratively campaign to convert Tallaganda State Forest into a protected national park.
There are currently a few spots left on the running team - more information and registration here. Courtney is also looking for a few more volunteers to help out on the day with course marshaling - please contact her at runfortheforests@gmail.com if you're keen.
